F/S Claudia Dzierbicki of  283 (Woodbridge Legion) Squadron, Woodbridge, Ontario being strapped in for her first

training flight and, six weeks later, receiving her Air Cadet Wings from Major-General (Retired) William Paisley

Mountain View – Claudia Dzierbicki, a Flight-Sergeant with 283 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Woodbridge, was presented her “Wings” by Major-General (Retired) William Paisley at the Central Region Gliding School’s “Wings” ceremony on Friday, August 15th.  The “wings” badge attests that she is now a fully qualified glider pilot and the holder of the much sought after Transport Canada Glider Pilot’s Licence.

Six weeks before, as she was ‘strapped in’ by her instructor, Officer-Cadet (OCdt) Anna Stromenberg, for her 1st training flight in the  Schweizer 2-33 glider, the “Wings” ceremony seemed a long way into the future.  For Claudia, it was a challenging process to reach this point in her cadet career.  She excelled at her home squadron, passed a mock Transport Canada (TC) Pilot’s exam, met the rigid medical standards, and then met with the interview board which put her name forward to be awarded one of the 97 Air Cadet League of Canada’s glider pilot scholarships.

Once at CRGS, for Claudia and as for her fellow fledgling pilots, earning her  “wings” was not a “walk-in-the-park”…hours in class and studying, awaited her in order to pass the actual TC Glider Pilot’s exam and mentally prepare for the “in cockpit, hands-on” that took place under, or more correctly…in front of, the watchful eye of her instructor.  Then came her “solo” flight, but only after her instructor felt confident in her abilities, and “recommended” her “solo”.  “An experience of a lifetime” as the rear seat was empty, but the skills she had practiced repeatedly and her self confidence prevailed.  A few weeks, later, with her training, final exams and flight tests completed, FSgt Claudia Dzierbicki along with other successful recipients, wears the air cadet “wings” qualification badge…the “Wings” of a Glider Pilot.
