9th Annual OPC Debating Competition

2012 OPC Debating Competition The 9th annual OPC Air Cadet Debating competition is scheduled for Sunday May 6, 2012 at Mohawk College in Hamilton. The competition will once again be held in the Information Technology Centre (iWing) with registration taking place in the Information Technology Centre Rotunda. A maximum of eighteen teams can be accommodated in the competition with a debating workshop for up to twenty--five Air Cadets also scheduled.
Squadrons are requested to complete and submit registration forms for the competition & workshop and lunch requisitions (available on the OPC web site at www.aircadetleague.on.ca ) at the earliest opportunity.
Debate Day Schedule
8:30am - Registration - Rotunda Area - Competitors to sign in and be issued with an identifying name tag. - Squadron conducting officers, judges and officials pick up meal tickets from the 150 “Tiger” Squadron table.)
9:15 - Briefing for competition and workshop participants and escorts. Lecture Theatre, Room i109
9:15 - Briefing session for Judges and Officials, Room i125
10:00 - Cadet Workshop begins in the Lecture Theatre, Room i109
10:00 - First round of debate commences – prepared topic
10:45 - Second Round of debate commences- prepared topic
11:30 - Lunch – Rotunda area
12:45 - Third Round of debate commences-impromptu topic
13:30 - Fourth Round of debate commences- impromptu topic
14:15 - Break while scores are tabulated
14:45 - Championship debate commences- prepared topic
15:45 - Presentations and Awards
Note: The schedule for debates, including teams, times and room locations, will be posted in the Rotunda Area. Please consult this schedule for details and last minute changes.
Please note that coaching is not permitted in the debate rooms but is permitted between rounds. Coaches may not participate in the debate in any way (including commenting on Speaker rulings or interacting with the judges in the debate rooms) – comments and concerns may be addressed to the Chief Judge Joanne Plaxton.
Note: The resolution for the prepared debate will be communicated to participating Squadrons two weeks in advance of the competition.
Teams will be advised of the impromptu resolution on the day of the competition.
Changes to the competition Rules & Regulations have been made to bring the competition more in line with the revised Ontario Student Debating Union model. Please ensure you closely review these changes. NOTE: These arrangements are subject to change and any necessary updates will be made on an ongoing basis. 2012 Air Cadet Debating Workshop Due to the success of previous years, workshops will again be offered in 2012 in conjunction with the Debating Competition. The workshop will be conducted in conjunction with the competition and will provide cadets with an opportunity to learn and practice their debating skills.
